Published: 2006-07-28 19:02

Compo Rules updates July 18th

  • GameDev compo accepts multiple platform support in single entry. You can have your game working on desktop PC and a mobile device at the same time
  • GameDev compo accepts now video submission by the author. The author may prepare a presentation video of the entry beforehand and submit it to Infodesk on Thursday.
  • Guitar Hero compo rules have been changed slightly

Compo Rules updates July 10th

Some small updates to the compo rules have been done since the first publication:
  • GameDev compo size limit is now 50MB.
  • Mobile demo compo size limit is now 8MB as PSP and Nintendo DS require more space for graphics and music.
  • Flash 9 is supported in Browser demos.
  • Unofficial compos published! We have at least DOTA, Red Faction and Guitar Hero!
  • Opera sponsors the Browser demo competition, so the default browser is now Opera 9. A special prize will be given to the best Opera entry.
  • Opera organizes an Opera Widgets Compo as part of the Widget World Cup at Assembly!
  • Fast music compo will be completely renewed for this year. The compo will be no longer based on predefined sampleset, but a predefined set of chords. All tools, even your own voice are allowed.

Changes from last year

The compo rules went through a major rewrite this year. Structuring of the computer arts compos was revised for clarity, consistency and maintainability. The rules for each compo consist from four different pages: general rules common for all competitions, file formats and platforms, compo-category rules and compo-specific rules. Other than this restructuring, the compo rules have been gone through only cosmetic changes:<

  • General
    • Updating the entries will be possible until one hour before the jury starts except in GameDev
    • Gamedev compo has two update points: Thursday noon and Saturday noon
  • Realtime-compos
    • Compo machine specs were updated. As always, Assembly compo machine reflects specifications of approximately 1000 EUR setup without monitor.
    • Mac and Linux entries are "bring your own machine with approximately the same specs than the Windows compo machine"
    • Mobile entries are allowed in GameDev compo
    • All mobile demos are "bring your own device"
    • In the Oldskool compos the PTN submission is MANDATORY. This can't be stressed this enough: if your entrys info is not found from the PTN, we won't even look at it. No exceptions. End of story.
    • In Oldskool music MP3/OGG submission is MANDATORY in addition to the platform version.
  • Music compos
    • Only MP3/OGG submissions allowed in music compos (you may attach XMs and ITs though)
    • The Fast music competition concept is completely renewed for this year.
  • Graphics compos
    • Graphics compo submission resolution was updated to 1024x768
    • You may submit the image in other formats IN ADDITION to the official. For example if you have a vector image, an SVG export with the entry is preferred.
    • Compressed TIFF is no longer supported due to compatibility problems
  • Short film
    • The only allowed file format is DV AVI Type II PAL. Last year there was only one non DV-AVI entry
