Demo, intro, GameDev and oldskool competitions

Che Guevara by Fairlight (Asm’05 64k intro winner)Realtime competitions are the most prestigious of all ASSEMBLY competitions. Demos and intros are not pre-rendered animations but rather non-interactive programs made for a chosen computing platform (Windows, Flash, or mobile phones for few examples). These programs are made to show off one's skills and to entertain the general audience. Since the user cannot interact with the program flow the demos are kept short, packed with stunning visuals and often synched with a catchy soundtrack.

The Game development competition has been added to the ASSEMBLY compo mix to encourage the demo creators and everybody else to design interactive entertainment. It is not about creating the next Doom3 or Half-Life 2, but creating something smaller and yet much more creative. The games are fun and often wacky.

Realtime competition categories are spread over three different plaforms: Desktop platform for personal computers; Mobile platform for cellular phones and mobile gaming devices; and Oldskool platform for computers of the past. Each platform have its own tricks of trade that you need to master to rank high in the competition categories.
